About a year or so ago, I met one of the loveliest people in wine. Philippa Carr MW was on a trip with me in the South of France, and she’d just been approached by Spar, the Dutch franchised supermarket chain, to help out with their wine selection. I was very noddy and smiley as she spoke, genuinely chuffed she was so enthused by it, but didn’t think much more of it to be honest. That was until I heard they were launching a new wine range last week at a venue round the corner from my flat. Be rude not to check it out, right?
Lidl UK had a new set of wines ready for us to taste yesterday in Central London. The mostly French-themed selection make up the bulk of what will be on the shelves for the Autumn and Winter in supermarkets across the country. Here’s my take on the top three whites and top three reds to keep an eye out for…and a cheeky rosé just for good measure! 😉
It’s got to be one of the biggest complaints from punters. They’re just after a half decent bottle of wine when they pop their head into the wine aisle at a supermarket, and whack! 300 bottles of nearly indecipherable labels are staring back at you. Well guess what, it’s one of the biggest gripes of wine writers and sellers too!
Last week I went down to the Waitrose Wine Tasting releasing their range for the autumn and winter of 2015/16. It’s another of these days where you walk into a room with knocking on 200 wines in there. I’m in there with all the great and the good of the UK wine press, and a few of them have to whizz round and make notes on each and every one of them. That’s pretty hardcore tasting!
On Friday night I popped down to Sainsbury’s in Camden to go pick up the food and wine for this weekend’s New Wine This Week. I have to admit I still haven’t done it as yesterday was the 17th of May and my Norwegian wife was in charge (it’s Norway’s national day). But whilst I was there I noticed a couple of people who were struggling a bit…
