Until a couple of years or so ago I found drinking spirits pretty tough. All of them infact. Whisky, gin, rum, tequila, you name it. I’d drunk them in the student bars and pubs and whinced nearly every time. I just couldn’t work out why you’d do this to yourself?! Funny how things have changed…

I got an email a few weeks back by the fine folks at Luxx PR and asked if I fancied taking part in a cocktail making challenge? It was in conjunction with Chase spirits and Heartsease mixers, and I just had to come up with a cocktail using their ingredients. Never really had a go at making a cocktail from scratch before, so sounded like a laugh. A few days later a couple of samples of gin and vodka turned up with a selection of the Heartsease products. Time to get mixing!

What is it with the winter? I literally have a 5 second commute from one end of my flat to the other to start work. It’s not exactly the toughest in the world, but I still really struggle to drag myself out of bed and get on with work. Trouble is that leads to the rest of the day slipping a bit, so once again last week I missed a day of blogging. D’oh!

Regular readers will know that I’ve just finished my coursework for my first year of Diploma studies. I think everyone I spoke to on my course knew that we got pretty lucky. Our topic was gin, basically the hows and whys it’s now such a big deal in the spirit industry compared with 30 years ago. Now, along with about 50 of my classmates, I’m a complete gin geek!

So the exam is done, the coursework is being printed and I’m whizzing that in tomorrow. Fingers and toes all crossed that’s me done for year 1 of the Diploma! Now I can get back to the easy bit of making a go of two start-up companies and getting my name out there in the big wide world of wine…hmmm.

I’ve spent the last few weeks trying to write a report on gin. I think sometimes you think about whether you’re meant to be enjoying stuff or just getting it done. That might sound a bit daft, as surely doing both is the dream ticket? Well unfortunately for me if I get interested in something, then I fly off topic pretty quick. So writing a report of what’s happening in the gin market at the minute is incredibly fun, but sending me off in all kinds of tangents!
