For the final winery trip of the day it was off into the mountains to meet up with Sergi at Cellar Joan Ametller. This was a spacious effort, with a modern winery built with the practicalities of the modern world in mind. I even got wifi!
The whole point of this place is to use the mountains. It’s higher up, it’s got the streams from the hills, it’s got valleys, and plains, and every chance to make a variety of styles from the same grapes.
Again they’re going for the Catalan varities, and on arrival we were surprised with a lovely chilled glass of white garnacha. They’ve got this fallen down old house with no roof that made a great atmospheric spot to sit, sip, and have a think in the sunshine. I really hope Sergi whacks a roof back up and turns it into an eating spot.
Back into the winery now, and we sat and had a taster through their reds and young whites. It was a great finish to a great day. Everyone we met was just so open to having us there. Sergi was a top host, and some of the touches he put in place were seriously impressive!
The views were great, the wines were great, and the day was unforgettable.
Cheers
Mike
