One of the best lessons I ever learned from my previous job was that there’s no such thing as a stupid question. Unless, of course, you ask it twice. So I’ll save any of you the trouble of asking this.
Champagne is a sparkling wine made in France. Specifically it’s made in the Champagne region of North East France, where the wine gets its name from. Any other sparkling wine from anywhere else in the world is not Champagne.
The three cool climate grapes that go into making Champagne are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. The last two of those are red grapes, but careful pressing and minimal skin contact means the wines stay white.
The biggest thing about Champagne is the way it’s made. It used to be called the Champagne method, but the Champagne people got a bit pissed off at other people using the method round the world calling it that, so now it’s known as the Traditional Method. That’ll be tomorrow then!
