#NWTW Week 12: Crémant de Somewhere

I’m trying to work out what we’re celebrating this week.  This is our first bubbly of the year, so there’s got to be some kind of celebration happening surely?  Well Ant and I did actually meet in person last week, and spent some good time chatting about all things wine and Liverpool Football Club.  That’s worth celebrating, right? (United fans please don’t stop reading, that’s the last mention of it I swear!)

First thing’s first: Crémant is NOT champagne.  It is however made using the traditional method, which I’ll explain later on in the week.  It’s roughly (very roughly) the standard for sparkling wine in the rest of France.  It’s more about the method used to make it rather than the grape, although the different grapes give the different characters across the country.

There’s Crémant de Loire (made with chenin blanc usually), there’s Crémant de Bourgogne (usually aligoté or chardonnay), and so on across the regions.

The reason I’ve not specified a region in the post is because UK shops are usually pretty obsessed with champagne, cava, and prosecco.  Crémant rarely gets a look in.  So this week it’ll be down to the local specialist wine shop I’m afraid.  If they’re any good at all, they’ll have one from at least one region of France.  Just grab it and drink it.

  2. Thank you for the pick. Last year, I tasted and then recommended several Cremant which I subsequently stocked. And there they sit still untouched. As you say Cremant generally overlooked in favour of more understood and popular fizzies. Limoux one of my favs.

  6. This is a great week and my first bottle is from the Loire… from Bollinger’s western outpost, Langlois Chateau. If you’re ever in the region then head on over – the tour is excellent and the tasting afterwards consisted of 10 wines. And then they basically give it away! I paid €10.45 for this bottle – if you loo on Winesearcher.com you’ll find it in the UK for about £12… search it out, it’s brilliant!

    Domaine Langlois-Chateau Brut Medaille d’Or Cremant de Loire NV (€10.45)
    60% Chenin Blanc, 20% Chardonnay, 20% Cabernet Franc, spends 24 months on lees. Honey, apples and pastry aromas which are very pleasant indeed. Very dry but there’s a delightful hint of honey right at the end, after the apples and peaches have dissolved. Lovely light mousse of bubbles. This would make a superb wedding sparkler instead if a cheap, naff Champagne! 8.5/10 – rounded up to 9!
