Talking about throwing yourself in at the deep end! It’s tough enough setting up a market stall when you’ve never done it before, add that to the task of trying to sell wine at 10am in a food market, then add it to…well you get the picture. But without a doubt the toughest thing over the last two weekends has been the temperature.
Winter’s finally arrived in the South West of England. I think elsewhere in the UK they’d take that over the flooding that’s buggering up life for tens of thousands, so I’m not going to complain too much. I’m also perversely happy that we’re finally getting a semi-extreme of weather. For the last 10 months all we’ve had is 10-15 degrees and grey. At least it’s not that!
Only slight snag is trying to get people to try and appreciate samples of our red wines. I don’t like telling people what they should or shouldn’t be smelling or tasting when they’re having a go at a wine. They’ll make up their own minds on whether they like it or not. But when it’s too cold for any of the flavour compounds to make an appearance then I’m kind of stuck unless I open my mouth and start rambling.
Thinking I was ahead of the game buying wine coolers for the whites and bubbly, I missed the salient fact that it was feckin’ freezing outside. Those wine coolers are about as useful as a chocolate teapot at the minute. What I needed was the opposite.
Well they’ve turned up this week, so let’s see how the wine warmers get on this weekend
