#NWTW Week 51: What To Eat With Champagne

week 51 fish and chips

Champagne is always seen as a classic party drink. Something we all swill down over a chat and maybe, just maybe, a couple of canapés. You know, something classy like a vol-au-vent, you know? 🙂 But this is a serious food wine, and you can have a good old bit of fun with it!

We have this thing we do every Christmas morning. Champagne and bacon muffins. Awesome stuff. The muffin pairs great with the yeasty flavour in the champagne, the fat of the bacon goes great with the acidity of the wine, and the saltiness of the bacon always lifts the flavours of any wine you’re drinking. I avoid the red sauce and just go big on the butter.

Tonight’s New Year’s Eve and it’s time for the ultimate Champagne food pairing. Fish and chips. Exactly the same as with the bacon muffins, the batter and the yeasty flavour pairs, it’s fatty, it’s salty, and the champagne acts as the most perfect palate cleanser after every sip.

When you break down into the different grapes you can really go off the reservation. For example, take a Blanc De Noirs. Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. How good would that be with something like duck breast and steamed vegetables?

If you went for a demi-sec then we’re onto the puddings! Fruit puddings, like a steamed forest fruits kind of deal, with a demi-sec rosé Champagne? Perfect.

Champagne is great cos you can drink it whatever time of day it is. Just don’t forget about dinner time too!

Cheers
